Sounds of Colour
I love the process of playing with colour and overlaying translucent and opaque layers of paint, in search of new colour relationships. I use white as a structural tool so that it is never solid but allows a glimpse of the colour just beneath, creating passages of paint that seem to recede into the surface of the painting. As these pictures emerge, semi-transparent layers appear like refractions of light dancing over a landscape and geometric shapes as shards of glass on a skyscraper window.
Evoking the feeling of light passing through an open window, or the sound of distant notes, paintings can be interpreted as musical passages, the noise of rushing water deep in rock mountain pools, or the silence of looking down over land or city from high above. The reflection of London, seen from a distance, is depicted in mirror form, as paintings take on the form of echoes, acoustic waveforms or spectrograms. Buildings depicted as translucent cubic blocks are juxtaposed together where space, light, colour, sensation, and sound are all incorporated.
Perceptions are interpreted and mixed with memories as they are translated into the language of painting.
